Who we are

Butterfly Creek is a privately owned and operated, ZAA accredited zoological park which is located close to Auckland Airport. 

Our focus has been on tropical and exotic species including a large tropical butterfly house, mature salt-water crocodiles, American alligators and various other reptile species, meerkats, porcupine, tamarins and otters plus large aquaria, a variety of insects and tarantula as well as a highly interactive farmyard. 

Our latest development includes a very large lace monitor exhibit. 

We have also established the captive rear-and-release programme for Giant Wētā (Wētāpunga) and are members of the kiwi captive management programme hosting two brown kiwi in our state-of-the-art kiwi nocturnal house.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced, confident and knowledgeable zoo keeper to join our team. 

The successful applicant will work across our collection however we are looking for a person with special emphasis working with ectotherms and the confidence to participate in and develop our crocodile encounters following Butterfly Creek's thorough training programme. 

You will need to be organised and disciplined and preferably have experience working with larger reptilian species.

The intangible qualities of initiative, drive and aptitude are highly valued as is the ability to work unsupervised. 

You will have the following skills and attributes : 
• 3 years or more relevant zoo experience, including experience with reptiles.
• Excellent communication skills 
• Capable of hosting interesting and engaging animal encounters for our visitors
• Ability to execute tasks to a high standard and to follow established procedures including attention to detail in all aspects of the job
• Capable of working productively in a team environment
• A high level of appreciation for all matters around health and safety
• Basic computer skills,
• Preferably a formal qualification in captive animal management
• Physically fit
• Well presented 
• You will need to be a NZ resident or legally able to work in NZ
