World Tree Kangaroo Day

On May 21st, we celebrate World Tree Kangaroo Day.

Tree Kangaroos are a unique and fascinating species only found in Papua New Guinea (housing 9 species), Indonesia (the Province of West Papua), and north-eastern Australia.

Sadly, 7 out of the 14 species are considered Endangered or Critically Endangered due to habitat destruction, defragmentation, over-hunting, injury, and death due to cars and dogs. It is imperative that we draw attention to the ways in which the global community can support conservation efforts of these remarkable animals.

Last year, with the help of 44 organisations across 11 regions, the campaign was able to reach 1.25 million social media users. This year, the goal is to make an even greater impact by utilizing various promotional tools such as sharing fun facts about the Tree Kangaroo, games and activities, crafting, and an Augmented Realty (AR) Experience for audiences.

To aid in your efforts, AZA-SAFE (Association of Zoos and Aquaria, Saving Animals from Extinction) Tree Kangaroo of Papua New Guinea has provided a toolkit.
