Head/Supervising Mammal and Bird Keeper

Reporting to: Manager Life Sciences

Position Purpose: The successful applicant will run the Mammals and Birds Section. This role includes duties such as providing a high standard of husbandry and care of the mammal and bird collection, exhibit maintenance and design, behavioral enrichment programs, customer service, public presentations, media, record keeping and budget reviews. The position also requires the successful applicant to manage other staff in these areas, along with the section’s extensive volunteer program. The applicant will also be able to develop the section and continue to develop the Reptile Park’s policies, safe work procedures, animal care and husbandry techniques, collection management, industry representation and presentations, staff and volunteer development.

The successful applicant will be a strong team player, with the ability to follow instruction easily and without supervision.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with some Australia’s most unique animals and cutting edge conservation projects including a variety of Bird species, Platypus, Wombats, Koalas, and be involved in one of Australia’s largest Tasmanian Devil breeding facilities.

Essential Criteria

· A minimum equivalent of 3 years relevant experience and training in the care and husbandry of Australian Mammals and Birds
· A positive attitude and work ethic
· Leadership & supervision skills with an emphasis on motivation
· Strong public speaking skills
· Public relations skills
· Excellent customer service skills
· Must speak fluent English
· Good written communication skills
· Good time management skills
· Driver’s License class A
· Awareness of Occupational Health and Safety principles
· Ability to work as a team
· Good animal observational skills
· Good problem solving skills
· Ability to carry out interactive activities when required. This could include but not limited to assisting in public demonstrations and or events, externals, media, birthday parties, tour groups, and visitor photo sessions.

Desirable Criteria

· Experience in the care and husbandry of Koalas including Koala leaf cutting
· TAFE Certificate III in Captive animals equivalent or above
· Experience with recordkeeping
· Experience in public speaking
· Some computer skills
