Salary $75,134 - $82,648 p.a. + 10% superannuation

We are seeking a Post Trade Keepers to join the Trail of the Elephant precinct where you can make a positive contribution to our multi generation elephant program.

These positions will continue the development and evolution of Zoos Victoria's elephant program, with the target of providing best practice animal care in a holistic environment. Candidates must have experience working with potentially dangerous animals in a protective contact environment, high level of animal training experience and ideally Elephant Keeping experience.

The candidate must possess:

  • Experience in working with potentially dangerous animals in a protective contact environment
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience working in a zoo environment
  • Demonstrated operational leadership experience working in a zoo environment
  • Demonstrated ability of advanced medical animal training skill set in a protective contact environment
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance a positive work culture with a strong desire for continuous improvement
  • Open-mindedness and a willingness to accept new ideas and perspectives and a desire to learn through collaboration, reading, and experimentation.
  • A strong focus on safety and identifying hazards in the workplace.
  • Be a highly motivated, focused and cooperative team member with excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Possess a high level of interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, essential for working in a close team environment.
  • Certificate III Captive Animals or relevant qualifications in a zoological related discipline
  • An Employee status Victorian Working with Children Check
  • Up to date COVID-19 vaccination status

The candidates ideally possess:

Previous experience relating to elephant care including:

  • Qualifications in a zoological related discipline and demonstrated experience and familiarity with the husbandry of elephants
    • dynamic herd relationships
    • calf birth experience
    • adult and calf training
    • bull management
    • variable age structures
    • positive reinforcement training skill set for proactive health care
    • habitat management
    • dynamic enrichment program

As part of the Melbourne Zoo Animal Husbandry Team, you will be required to work a roster across a 7-day week, including weekends and public holidays if required. Be capable of completing highly physical work on a daily basis and hold a valid

Australian driver's license or have the ability to attain one.
