Job Description

Level 1
Under direct supervision this position provides general care, husbandry and health monitoring to a range of taxa in the Perth Zoo collection.
The role of this position is to work predominantly under direct supervision as an effective member of the section team providing the highest level of basic care, husbandry and health monitoring of a limited range of section taxa in the Perth Zoo collection. Proficiency and competencies are measured against the Zoo’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Training will occur as operationally required.

Level 2
Under general supervision this position provides general care, husbandry and health monitoring to a range of taxa in the Perth Zoo collection.
The role of this position is to work under general direction as an effective member of the section team providing the highest level of care, husbandry and health monitoring of a broad range of section taxa in the Perth Zoo collection. Proficiency and competencies are measured against the Zoo’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Selection Criteria

Applicants who wish to be considered at both Level 1 and Level 2 should prepare responses to both sets of criteria.

Level 1
Applicants should address the following four (4) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than three (3) pages in total.
1. Good knowledge of animals, their biology and ecological threats.
2. Some experience in the husbandry and management of animals in an environment relevant to this role.
3. Ability to express ideas and information effectively, verbally and in writing, including public speaking and the observation of and reporting on animal behaviour.
4. Good interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively, individually and in a team environment.

Level 2
Applicants should address the following four (4) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than three (3) pages in total.
1. Certificate III in Zoo Keeping or Captive Animal Management or equivalent.
2. Knowledge of animals, their biology and ecological threats.
3. Applied knowledge and experience in animal husbandry, animal observation and animal management in a zoo or similar environment.
4. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a team and to communicate well verbally and in writing.

Applicants who have experience with exotic animal species will be highly regarded, specifically rhinoceros, giraffes, carnivores, ungulates and primates.

Note: Successful applicants will be required to possess or obtain a current (issue date not older than 6 months) and satisfactory National Police Check prior to commencement. Successful applicants will also be required to undertake a pre-employment medical assessment and preventative vaccination program prior to commencement.
