The Position

This is an outstanding opportunity to be part of an exciting new zoo in the role of fulltime Senior Zookeeper, primarily assigned to the Australiana department, utilising your skills in an area that you are genuinely passionate about.

The Senior Zookeeper will work with the Animal Care Manager relevant to their department on efficient and integrated daily operations for the section and the team.

The Senior Zookeeper will be responsible for supporting the Animal Care Manager by assisting all teams in applying high standards of animal husbandry skills across their section, maintaining the high level of animal welfare for the animals in their team’s care and recruitment initiatives.

Sydney Zoo is open every day of the year and this position will require the successful candidate to work some weekends and public holidays.

Skills, Knowledge, and Relevant Experience

  • Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in relevant animal human-care husbandry and animal management.
  •  Experience in habitat maintenance and the ability to review habitats and to assess their visitor appeal.
  •  Demonstrated experience or potential to coordinate, lead, develop, and motivate staff.
  •  Demonstrated experience in species management.
  •  Strong focus and skilled in visitor engagement.
  •  Good written and oral communication skills and an ability to deal with the media.
  •  Problem-solving skills.
  •  Ability to adapt to changing operating environments.
  •  Thorough understanding of the World Aquarium and Zoo and Aquarium Association (WAZA)
  •  Conservation and Animal Welfare Strategies and demonstrated knowledge of implementation thereof, with the emphasis on the Australasian region.
  •  Valid and current driver’s license with the ability to drive a manual vehicle.
  •  Native browse knowledge and experience in cutting browse highly regarded.
  •  Experience working with international tourist groups and native animal encounters highly regarded.
