Reporting to: Head Keeper – Reptiles and Spiders
Position Purpose: The Reptile Park is looking for a motivated person to join our Reptile department!
This includes duties such as providing a high standard of husbandry and care of the Reptile and Spider collection, exhibit maintenance and design, behavioral enrichment programs, customer service, School education shows, media, record keeping, and public presentations. The position will have significant involvement in upcoming conservation programs and community-based initiatives.
The successful applicant will be a strong team player, with the ability to follow instruction easily and without supervision.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with some Australia’s most unique animals as well as many exotic reptile and spider species, including involvement in an AQIS quarantine arachnid facility, funnel web venom production and one of the largest reptile collections in Australia.
Essential Criteria
• Leadership & supervision skills with an emphasis on motivation
• Be willing to engage in future conservation programs
• Have a strong taxa knowledge
• Have strong presentation skills (including at a school-based level)
• Cover all areas of husbandry
• A minimum equivalent of 2 years relevant experience and training in the care and husbandry of Reptiles and Spiders
• Customer service skills must be at a very high standard
• Strong public speaking skills
• Must speak fluent English
• Good written communication skills
• Good time management skills
• Driver’s License class A
• Awareness of Work Health and Safety principles
• Ability to work as a team
• Good animal observational skills
• Good problem solving skills
• Ability to carry out interactive activities when required. This could include but not limited to assisting in public demonstrations and or events, externals, media, birthday parties, tour groups, and visitor photo sessions.
• Double vaccinated for Covid-19
Desirable Criteria
• Venomous snake handling skills
• Medium to large size crocodile experience
• Invertebrate husbandry and care experience
• Training and managing large volunteer team
• TAFE Certificate III in Captive animals equivalent or above
• Experience with recordkeeping
• Experience in public speaking
• Some computer skills
