Melbourne Zoo has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, ambitious and highly motivated leader to join the Invertebrates Precinct. The Precinct maintains a diverse array of species and is directly involved in conservation recovery programs. Reporting to the Life Science Manager, the Invertebrates Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating the daily operations and scheduling of work flow for the precinct. This includes overseeing daily husbandry and ensuring the health and welfare of all animals under their care, as well as maintaining excellent condition of the exhibits, workspaces and participating in various projects and other activities as needed.

Candidates must have a genuine interest in conservation ecology, and possess prior experience working with invertebrates in a zoo environment, along with knowledge of Zoos Victoria's philosophy and vision. A positive, mature attitude, enthusiasm and a strong work ethic is required to continually progress the Precinct. The Invertebrates Coordinator will utilize and encourage others to utilize evidence-based husbandry techniques to ensure the positive welfare state of animals in their care and take a lead in mentoring and training of staff and maintaining positive culture on the Precinct.  

The candidate will have:

  • Substantial professional experience working in a zoo/captive environment with extensive experience with Invertebrates.
  • Experience in leading a team of high-performing zoo keepers.
  • Qualifications in a zoological related discipline.
  • Strong emotional intelligence, empathy, and communication skills in the workplace, and an ability to promote these attributes within the department and zoo-wide to achieve the vison of the precinct and Zoos Victoria.
  • Ability to balance zoo operational requirements with objectives of conservation recovery programs in a fast-paced environment.
  • A sound understanding of captive population species management and planning including conservation breeding programs.
  • Previous exposure to and involvement in in situ invertebrate conservation recovery programs.
  • Proven ability to foster and develop staff expertise in specific taxonomic disciplines.
  • Proven working knowledge of biosecure hygiene management protocols and exceptional procedural standards.
  • Proven ability to implement effective work practices that adhere to OH&S policies and other relevant legislative requirements.
  • Open-mindedness and a willingness to accept new ideas and perspective and a desire to learn through collaboration, research and experimentation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to engage and work closely with a diverse range of stakeholders and agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and well-developed problem-solving skills.
  • Proven project management skills required
  • Research and report writing experience
